With practically all Melons available now at any time of year, such a seasonal grouping is a bit odd, but it's less daunting than the alternative scientific classifications.

Winter Melons ripen more slowly than Summer Melons and can withstand the cold better. They are harvested later in the fall while unripe.

When ripe, they have no scent that is discernible before they are cut open. Their flesh is paler and their flavour is more subtle than that of Summer Melons.

With skin that is harder and more solid than that of Summer Melons, Winter Melons travel better to markets, and store better, as the skin holds moisture in. Their skin can be smooth, but it's just as often furrowed and/or ridged.

This group of Melons is also called the "inodorus" or the "non-netted" group of Melons.

Winter Melons are different from Winter Melon Squash.
