White Vinegar © Denzil Green Okay, this is the fun one. This is the vinegar that foodies really love to hate. They'll admit that you can use it for cleaning windows (though it doesn't really do as good a job as real window cleaning products), and grant that you can use it for pickling, but they froth over at the thought of using it for anything else.
But let's face it. All throughout North America, this is the one vinegar that you can count on finding in the cupboard. Put on all the airs you want, chances are if you're whipping up a salad dressing at Aunt Marge's, you ain't going to find no balsamic or red wine vinegar there. And are you really that insecure that you have boost your ego by making the poor old dear feel inferior because she doesn't have them? No, you won't, because you're a good cook. Granted, White Vinegar has more zing than it has taste. Okay, it has no taste. But because you're a good cook, you know how to compensate. You are going to root in the fridge and cupboard to find other things to make that salad dressing taste great. And everyone's going to have a nice meal, and no one is going to give fancy, foreign vinegars a second thought. (Wait, is that cider vinegar I saw behind the pancake syrup? Grab that; it's a step up!)
White Vinegar is one of the best selling vinegars in North America because it is the most versatile and the cheapest. It can be used for pickling, cole slaw, cooking and household cleaning, even. It is even okay on fish and chips, but malt would be many people's first choice.
White Vinegar can be either distilled from grains such as barley, or from ethyl alcohol.
Cooking Tips
Good for pickling as will not affect colour at all of items being pickled.
