Tummelberries are a raspberry hybrid variety.

They are firm, medium to large-sized longish berries that ripen to a bright red. They are ready for harvest from July to mid-August. The flavour is mild.

Tummelberries freeze well and hold their shape when thawed.

The bush's canes need support.

History Notes for Tummelberries

Tummelberries were developed by the Scottish Crop Research Institute, which also developed the Tayberry which Tummelberries resemble. The Institute crossed a Tayberry seedling with another Tayberry seedling, making Tummelberries, like their parents, a blackberry / raspberry cross. One of the goals was to produce a more cold-hardy bush than the Tayberry, but critics complain some of the flavour got lost in attaining the goal.

Language Notes about Tummelberries

Tummelberries are named after the Tummel River in Perthshire, Scotland.
