Shafer Applecrabs grow 1 3/4 inches (4 cm) wide, with bright yellow skin flushed with bright red.

Inside, they have yellow, crisp, slightly coarse but tender flesh, with a juicy, sweet, good flavour.

Shafer Applecrabs ripen early September.

Cooking Tips
Good for fresh-eating and sauce.

Storage
Stores better than most other applecrabs.

History
Shafer Applecrabs were first found by a W. Shafer at Poplar Point, Manitoba, Canada.

C.C Peters (Fruit and Vegetable Specialist, Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food) says in "Prairie Apple Cultivars" that the parentage is unknown. Many gardening guides say the parentage is a cross between Trail and Rescue applecrabs, the same as for Rosybrook Applecrabs.

Introduced in 1963 by the Morden Research Station in Manitoba.
