Nori Maki
NorimakizushiMaki Sushi are pieces of sushi that are sliced from a roll of sushi.
To make it, you place a sheet of toasted nori seaweed on a flexible bamboo mat ("sudare" or "maki-su"), then a layer of sushi rice on top it, then a layer of filling.
The filling is called a "gu."
The mat is then rolled up, while pressing down firmly, to make a rice roll.
Then the mat is removed, and the roll is sliced across the end to make slices.
Maki Sushi is often made vegetarian.
Hoso maki are very narrow ones.
Futo maki (aka o-maki) are thick ones, about 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter, that have several bites in them.
Also spelled "Makizushi" in English,
"Maki" means "roll."
