Jaffa Cakes
Jaffa Cakes are cookies (or sweet biscuits) that have a firm, spongey base. The base is spread with orange jelly and then topped with chocolate.

They were first made by McVitie's and launched in 1927. Many supermarkets have their own brands now, as do Marks & Spencers.

Jaffa Cakes are very hard to stop eating. There are fan clubs dedicated to them.

They are not good for dunking in tea, though, because like a piece of cake, they will dissolve.

History
In 1991, good ole' Jaffa Cakes fought the taxman and won. The Inland Revenue in the UK wanted to classify Jaffa Cakes as a chocolate-covered biscuit, because biscuits that are chocolate-covered are subject to a sales tax. Cakes, whether covered in chocolate or not, are not. McVitie's position was that Jaffa Cakes are small cakes covered in chocolate, and not biscuits covered in chocolate. McVitie's took the taxman to a Tribunal hearing, where it presented the chairman of the Tribunal with a foot-wide Jaffa Cake. The Chairman agreed with McVitie's and Jaffa Cakes remain free of sales tax at the present (2004). The UK taxman, however, is still smarting at being outfoxed, and apparently is plotting to get legislation passed to get Parliament to declare that Jaffa Cakes are biscuits.

Language Notes
Jaffa Cakes were first made with Jaffa oranges, and thus the name, though now many different types of oranges are used.
