Guaperu

Jaboticaba is a small fruit that looks like a grape. It is anywhere from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches (1 1/2 to 4 cm) wide, with tough, thick skin, and white flesh with 1 to 4 seeds in it.

The skin can be a tad bitter, but otherwise the flavour of the fruit actually is somewhat like a grape as well.

Jaboticaba grows on a small, bushy tree that has light brown bark with cream-coloured patches. It blossoms with small, white flowers, and produces fruit at several times during the year. The fruit grows attached directly to the tree trunk and large branches, not hanging off a stem. A fruit grows either on its own, or in a cluster.

Jaboticaba can be eaten out of hand, or can be used for jam, jellies or wine.

The fruit is popular in Brazil.
