Cipollini are small onions, about the size of ping pong balls, that grow flat at their tops and bottoms. They are 1 to 2 inches (3 to 5 cm) wide and about 1 inch thick (2.5 cm.) There are yellow and red skinned ones.

They have a very mild, sweet flavour. From seed, they take 2 1/2 to 3 months to grow.

They are like pearl onions in terms of how you use them. They are meant to be used and served whole. They can be braised, pickled or cooked on kebabs or in dishes.
