Bobwhite Quail
Bobwhite Quail live from southern Mexico right up to Canada; they are also being bred in Hawaii and New Zealand for game.
There are 20 subspecies; ones in Mexico have more white on their throats.
They are often raised for hunting, and for sale to the food market. They are popular game birds in south-eastern United States.
The birds tend to peck one another.
They fly when disturbed, and during the winter, form flocks of 30 or more.
They start laying eggs in April, though when being bred in captivity the use of light can encourage them to lay for longer periods, even year round. The eggs are all-white and hatch in 21 days.
History
Bobwhite Quail was chosen in 1970 as the official game bird of the state of Georgia, United States.
