Almata Apples

Almata are small to medium-sized apples with pale red skin with a grey flush, and red flesh.

The taste is quite sour, though it will sweeten enough when fully ripe for some people's tastes to eat fresh.

Generally, though, Almata Apples are thought of as a good sauce apple; making a red sauce.

The tree is quite winter hardy. It blossoms with dark pink flowers in the spring, and produces fruit that ripens in the late summer.

History
Almata Apples were bred from a cross between Beautiful Arcade and Fluke 38 crab apples. They were developed by a Dr Nels Hansen at the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station in South Dakota, USA.
